History

Our Club is now in its 33rd year.

Holt Bowls Club was formed in 1988, an amalgamation of the White Lion Men's and Ladies' Bowls Clubs. Here is a picture of our opening day.

We started as a club playing Federation Bowls in several leagues.  After two years the Men affiliated to the Norfolk EBA, followed by the Ladies three years later affiliating to the Norfolk EWBA.  Over the years we have played in various leagues.  We now have a Mens EBA team and 4 Mixed Federation teams, all playing in the evenings and 2 Federation Mixed teams, plus friendly matches, played in the afternoons.

We started off with approximately 60 members and soon had a waiting list - capped at 200.  Over the years, like many other clubs, the numbers have decreased but we still have approximately 100 members.

Our green belongs to the National Playing Fields Association and at the beginning was open to the elements.  The Association erected a fence around the green.  A Leylandii hedge was supplied by the members and laurel cuttings were nurtured by Dr. Latten from his own laurel hedge until ready for planting at the Woodfield Road border.

In the early days the green was looked after by Peter Mills, followed by Reggie Reynolds, John Carmen and John Munson.  Now stalwart club members do all the cutting, scarifying and maintenance necessary to keep the green in excellent condition, whilst others work hard to keep the clubhouse and premises looking good.

We have had success from several of our members.

Jim Rix, Keith Medlar, Bob Nurse, John Lynes and Gordon Bullock have all played for the Adams and Newton Federation County Teams.

Jean Bullock, Pat Fountain, Dianne Barnes, Jennie Eldred and Hazel Rix have played for the Ladies' Donald Steward and Silver Jubilee Vase teams.

Hazel Rix was County President for Norfolk County Womens Bowls Association (Federation) in 2008 and in the same year won the Senior Singles and represented Norfolk at Skegness.

In 2011 the ladies won the County Cup and the men won the Subsidiary Cup.

In 2014 Jennie won the EBA Norfolk Champion of Champions trophy and with Hazel and Dianne won the Norfolk EBA Coronation Triples trophy.

The club also won the Cawston Shield in 2014.

At the Ladies EBF County Finals on Saturday 18th July 2015 Dianne Barnes, Sue Ealden and Hazel Rix won the Ladies three wood triples at Aylsham.

In 2016 Joy and Gill reached the final of the EBA County Unbadged Pairs and Hazel and Jennie were finalists in the EBA County Pairs and represented Norfolk at Leamington Spa.

In 2017 Jennie was runner-up in the Norfolk Champion of Champions.
